Chapter Sixteen

Intergalactic Sensation

Kitty and I answered a mixture of mundane questions regarding our relationship and a couple of interesting ones that got us thinking about our Habitat’s growth. A couple of balloon-people audience members disguised advice and ideas as long questions too. Overall, I got the sense that people were glad and proud of us for not accepting the Alvan’s offer. We also noticed that pockets of the audience disappeared not long after them too.

After a little more than dozen questions, Glimmer cut us off. She did a small outro monologue for us, encouraging people to think about everything discussed during our segment and to follow our channel. Then the couch fell into the floor, and we found ourselves sitting in our dressing room chairs.

“That was terrifying.” I sighed. My shoulders felt tense from remaining stiff throughout the segments.

“It was exhilarating!” Kitty exclaimed, helping herself to a cider. “Going into broadcasting is my dream, you know. Well, it was before all of this happened.”

“It’s not for me.”

“You spoke more than I did though.”

“That doesn’t mean I wasn’t half a push from shitting my pants.”

Kitty coughed, spitting a spray of cider. “Don’t say shit like that when I’m running on a high and drinking,” she said. “How are we going to explain this to the crew?”

“We’re not,” I replied. “I tapped my goggles. I recorded the entire exchange. They’ll see it for themselves and decide.”

“It’ll cause discord, you know. We might lose people.”

“It hurts to say so, but do we want people that’ll sacrifice everyone on the planet—”

“You can’t hold it against them if they say yes to that question, Matt.” Kitty interrupted me mid-thought. “You and I both considered it. If my family is still alive, I’d consider abandoning every brainwashed person on the planet for them. We made the right decision and I appreciate that you included me in it, but it was an impossible one. I wouldn’t want to be the person who made it. It would haunt me if things don’t work out.”

When I helped myself to another beer, a little crate of eighteen bottles appeared next to my chair. I took that as our cue to get out and my stomach dropped as I climbed off the chair. Delta lay on the ground, smashed into smithereens. Kitty froze as her eyes settled on the remains too. Cracks covered the glass patch that served as his face and his lustrous metallic body had dented and warped, exposing the bits inside. A pink and blue portal manifested behind him, and no one came through. The ring’s center showed the Habitat’s roof, and I guessed it was a more powerful form of portal tech.

Kitty sighed. She shook her head and disappeared through the portal. I, on the other hand, hesitated. I could feel Delta or whatever remained of him.

“Glimmer protects organics,” I said. “That’s discriminatory against entities like you, isn’t it?”

My technopathic sense didn’t detect any change or fluctuations. Whatever gave Delta sentience was gone. The Alvans had got to him.
